Why the shop is called Reject
The name is the trade. Reject Pot Shop sold factory seconds and other secondary stock: pieces that had missed a manufacturer’s first-quality grade, were still sound for the table, and could be bought for less. The shop also said it kept new china from major makers, so a restaurant could match a service without paying showroom prices for every plate.
That mix was aimed at both sides of the pass. Hotels and restaurants needed durable white hotelware. Households in Primrose Hill, Hampstead and across London came for the same plain china, and for glass and metal to go with it.
Chalk Farm Road since 1980
The Camden New Journal reported that the pot shop began in earnest in 1980, after Michael Kenney had used the premises from 1976. Stock was chosen on regular buying trips to seconds warehouses in the Potteries. Thara Kenney, who had a catering background, widened the shop beyond china so customers were not sent elsewhere for pans and serving pieces.
The same report recalled a full-sized stuffed bison that stood on Chalk Farm Road as the shop’s landmark for many years, and quoted the owners as saying the plates at Marine Ices had come from them. Trade reached hotels and restaurants as well as home cooks.
